Joint embolization, also known to experts as transarterial periarticular embolization (TAPE), is a medical procedure used to treat chronic pain in the joints, for example in osteoarthritis. TAPE is used as a form of therapy for patients who continue to experience pain in their joints despite conservative treatment or surgery.

There are many different causes of joint pain. For example, chronic incorrect loading and inflammatory stimuli can lead to pathological vascularization, so-called vascular sprouting, in the synovial membrane. As a side effect, small nerve tracts and pain receptors multiply around the joint - those affected experience pain against which painkillers have only a limited effect or none at all. This is where TAPE joint embolization comes in - a minimally invasive procedure, i.e. a surgical intervention with the smallest possible incisions, which closes the vessels in certain areas of the affected joint in order to cut off the blood supply. As this stops the flow of inflammation, the joint is restored to normal.

In his lecture at the TU Ilmenau Citizens’ Campus, Ilhami Benli, Head Physician of the Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the Ilm-Kreis-Kliniken Arnstadt-Ilmenau, will talk about his experiences with TAPE therapy and his own forms of treatment.
