All About Structural Change

The Temporary University of Hambach 2024.

Discussions and workshops, exhibitions and lectures, symposia and personal discussions: For four days, everything in Morschenich-Alt once again revolved around structural change in the Rhenish Mining Area. For the second time after last year’s premiere, numerous people from the fields of science, society, politics, and business came together again on the edge of the Hambach open pit mine to exchange ideas. It was once again important that all those attending the June 2024 event were able to take part to the greatest extent possible.

Professor Agnes Förster, Head of the Institute for Planning Theory and Urban Development at RWTH, describes the successful project as a being an example of a "truly transparent university." Pupils, students and, of course, local people came together at TU Hambach, creating new connections between the university and society. Ideas for the future of the Rhenish Mining Area were developed together.

RWTH Aachen University organized the project together with Neuland Hambach GmbH. Its project manager Bianca Hohn particularly appreciates the proximity to and direct contact with local people: "It means that ideas emerge directly from the various events and that we can discuss the future and identify different perspectives together."
