Free Bicycle Repair Cafe and Clothing Exchange on April 26 and 27, 2017, at Freie Universität
‘ 093/2017 from Apr 24, 2017
Flat tires, squealing brakes, or a wonky front wheel? At the beginning of the summer semester at Freie Universität, there will be a bicycle repair cafe and clothing exchange in front of the main dining hall on Habelschwerdter Allee 45 in Dahlem. It will take place on April 26 and 27, 2017, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Bicycle owners are invited to repair their own bikes. Experts will be available to provide advice, and there will also be tools that may be used free of charge. Spare parts can be purchased at a reasonable price. Anyone wanting a new look in their spring outfits can bring lightly used clothing along and trade with someone else. The action days are being organized by the SUSTAIN IT! - Initiative for Sustainability + Climate Protection at Freie Universität - in cooperation with the Repair Café Schöneberg.
The project initiators wish to draw attention to the fact that many everyday objects are not used very long. "Under the motto Repair - Rethink - Reuse, right at the beginning of the semester, we want to make people aware that many everyday items are used too briefly, and we want to inform students about the concept of the Berlin repair café," says Karola Braun-Wanke, who coordinates the SUSTAIN IT! initiative. By repairing things together, people gain awareness for the value of products and the burden on the environment from increasing production, growth, and consumption. "Through the clothing exchange, we are also focusing on the global exploitation structures in place for the production of clothing, and we are trying to sensitize individuals to change their habits in favor of a more just and sustainable consumption," says Karola Braun-Wanke.
