Making War, Mapping Europe

Online Exhibition of Research Project Published: "Making War, Mapping Europe: Militarized Cultural Encounters, 1792-1920". Historians at Freie Universität Berlin have published their findings on military conflicts and cultural among French, British, and German soldiers from 1792 to 1920 online. Based on six case studies, the online exhibition "Making War, Mapping Europe" portrays cultural among soldiers from these three countries who were stationed at the periphery of Europe and in the Middle East during the so-called "long 19th century." The virtual exhibition was created in cooperation with Trinity College Dublin and the universities of Swansea and York. Evidence of these encounters is on display: photographs, works of art, souvenirs, and various useful objects that happened to survive. Hundreds of pictures and artifacts in the exhibition illustrate how military operations and expeditions ultimately functioned as catalysts for various forms of intercultural encounter. The artifacts were collected with the support of many museums, archives, and private persons. Historians from Freie Universität and its partner universities placed them in a historical context.
