The Cornerstone of Our Democracy

On May 23, RWTH’s Institute of Political Science is hosting a panel discussion to mark the 75th anniversary of the Basic Law.

75 years ago, on May 23, 1949, the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany, the cornerstone of our democracy and a bulwark against the enemies of freedom came into force. Dr. Carmen Krämer, Mayor of Monschau; and Dr. Domenica Dreyer-Plum, Caner Dogan, and Nicole Schwabe from the Institute of Political Science at RWTH will talk about selected aspects of the Basic Law in a panel discussion on Thursday, 23 May 2024, at 7 pm in Lecture Hall I of the RWTH Main Building, Templergraben 55.

The event is entitled "75 Years of the Basic Law: Exploring Continuity and Change in Germany’s Constitutional Framework and Government Structure".

Among other aspects, key principles of state organization, the free democratic basic order, human dignity, and the system of government are addressed, focusing on the balance between continuity and change since the Federal Republic’s establishment.

Professor Jared Sonnicksen from the Institute of Political Science will moderate the event. The event is part of RWTH’s Knowledge Hub, which in 2024 will have a focus on the topic of Freedom. Admission to the event is free, and prior registration is not required.
