The University Library is hosting an exhibition of works by Stolberg artist Hacky Ritzerfeld (1950-2024) in the foyer’s first floor gallery until October 9, 2024. Titled "Malen auf Alles" ("Painting on Everything"), the exhibition is open daily from 8am to midnight and is free of charge.
Ritzerfeld, a master student of Joseph Beuys, often used everyday materials as canvases. He painted on pizza boxes, napkins, and beer mats, transforming them into art.
He also reimagined printed books as art objects, redesigning them with his unique touch. He inserted hand-drawn illustrations and writings into the texts of the books, frequently filling the endpapers and half-titles with his drawings. Inside the books, he mostly used chalk, while for the covers, he employed bold acrylic colors. Occasionally, his art referenced the book’s text. In some instances, he nailed the books shut, preventing them from being read - sometimes as a commentary on the banality of their content.’
The works on display, created over a span of twenty years from 1993 to 2013, are from the private collection of Edith Hochscherff.
