The Thuringian Forest has already changed considerably in the past due to human use. And natural disasters have also changed it, with repercussions right up to the present day. However, the changes we are currently observing have a completely new dimension. In the past, scientists considered the climate to be a constant condition for forests. Today, however, the climate crisis is escalating to such an extent that forests are suffering to an unprecedented degree. Due to extremely warm and dry years, the spruce bark beetle has been spreading enormously in Thuringia since 2018. The beetle attacks spruce trees weakened by drought and causes them to die. As spruce is the most common tree species in the Thuringian Forest, the effects of the bark beetle infestation can be clearly seen in the dramatically changing landscape.

In his lecture at the TU Ilmenau Citizens’ Campus Hagen Dargel, head of the forestry office in Frauenwald, assesses the current situation around Ilmenau and describes what the Thuringian forest will look like in a few years’ time. At the end of his presentation, the expert will be available for discussion with visitors.
