Students at the University of Würzburg award high marks for computer science, mathematics, and physics. In the CHE Master’s Ranking 2024, all three subjects achieved strong results.

The latest edition of the CHE Master’s Ranking , published by the Center for Higher Education Development, was released on Wednesday, December 11, 2024. This time, students of computer science, mathematics, and physics were surveyed - and they handed Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) a positive report card.

"Teaching is a cornerstone of our university, which is why we are naturally very pleased when we are able to impress students with what we offer," says a satisfied University President Paul Pauli.

For the CHE ranking, master’s students were asked to rate various aspects of their program between one star (worst) and five stars (best). In addition to the general situation, they were also able to give marks for areas such as support from lecturers, study organization, digitalization in studies or practical relevance of the content.

Computer Science Impresses across the Board

144 students on the Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Aerospace Informatics, Satellite Technology and eXtended Artificial Intelligence degree programs rated the general study situation with an average of a strong 4.2 out of a possible five stars.

The organization of the degree courses also scored very well with 4.5 stars. Here, for example, students assess whether courses can be taken easily and without overlaps in the timetable. From the range of courses on offer to the level of digitalization and the practical orientation of teaching, computer science received above-average marks across the board.

In addition to the excellent student support (4.2 stars), the researchers in computer science also publish diligently - with an average of 2.7 publications per year, they also score above average here.

Mathematics is excellently organized - also for studying abroad

Mathematics also impresses with its master’s degree courses in Mathematics, Business Mathematics and Computational Mathematics. The general study situation was rated 4.1, and the organization of studies even received an excellent 4.7 stars.

A smooth transition from the bachelor’s to the master’s degree course, excellent support from the teaching staff as well as attractive offers and comprehensive support in studying abroad are further plus points.

Professor Hans-Stefan Siller, Dean of Studies of Mathematics, is delighted "that our work has been rewarded with such positive results. These results, both at faculty and institute level, confirm the path we have taken to further develop our courses in a research-based manner, oriented towards future opportunities and requirements. A modern teaching architecture with forward-looking elements is the cornerstone for future generations of students."

Physics also Impresses

The good ratings from the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science also continue at the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy. The 50 participating students on the master’s degree courses in Physics, Mathematical Physics, Quantum Engineering, Physics International and Quantum Technology feel that they are in great hands in Würzburg. This is evidenced by 4 stars for the general study situation and 4.5 stars for the organization of studies.

These degree courses also score points with a smooth transition to the master’s degree course, a wide range of courses and committed lecturers who are easy to contact with questions and problems and - as Professor Friedrich Reinert, Dean of Studies at the faculty, assures - "are also happy to provide individual help and advice in personal discussions."
