Academic position

The Department of Landscape Ecology and Vegetation Science (headed by Frank Schurr) studies biodiversity dynamics and the underlying ecological and evolutionary processes at different spatial and temporal scales as well as multiple hierarchical levels (genotypes, populations, species and communities). Much of our work is motivated by the need to quantitatively understand and forecast biodiversity responses to various drivers of environmental change in natural and human-dominated landscapes. To address our research objectives, we integrate experimental and observational studies, process-based modelling and advanced statistics.

We are looking for a highly motivated researcher who is keen to further develop their scientific profile. The successful candidate will have expertise in field-oriented vegetation ecology, a strong publication record commensurate with their career stage and good knowledge of the Central European flora (as attested e.g. by a BANU-Zertifikat Feldbotanik). We also expect a willingness to supervise students, apply for external funding and assist with group management. The position involves a modest amount of teaching (2 semester hours per week in German and English) with a focus on vegetation ecology in Central Europe. Candidates should hold a PhD or be close to completion of their PhD project.

We offer a part-time position (Germany civil service payscale TV-L E13, 50%) for 3 years with the possibility of extension for another 3 years. The position gives you the opportunity to develop your own research profile and to pursue a Habilitation (postdoctoral qualification degree). We offer full access to our group’s state-of-the art facilities for field work, common garden, greenhouse and lab experiments as well as scientific computing. While this is a part-time position, we would strongly support the applicant in seeking third-party funding to complement this position.

Hohenheim has a highly dynamic research environment that offers ample opportunities for collaboration in ecology, evolutionary biology, biodiversity research and related fields (see here for an overview). Our group is strongly involved in research initiatives on the role of biotic interactions for biodiversity dynamics (FLINT), biodiversity enhancement in agricultural landscapes ( NOcsPS , HABIT ), as well as two recently started Clusters of Excellence that will integrate plant biodiversity research with molecular biology ( GreenRobust ) and the geosciences ( TERRA ).
