New Center for Gender Studies at Freie Universität Berlin

Named after Philosophy Professor Margherita von Brentano. The Margherita von Brentano Center was founded at Freie Universität. The new center for gender studies was named after Margherita von Brentano (1922-1995), a professor of philosophy and the first woman to serve as a vice president of Freie Universität Berlin. The Margherita von Brentano Center has been tasked with initiating and coordinating activities related to gender and diversity studies in the areas of research and teaching as well as publication strategies. A significant role will be played by international and transnational research issues. The work formerly done by the Center for the Promotion of Women's and Gender Studies, which was founded in 1981, and the Interdisciplinary Center for Gender Studies is being merged in the new Brentano Center. "With the newly established Margherita von Brentano Center, gender studies at Freie Universität is being given more importance as an interdisciplinary field," says Margreth Lünenborg, a professor of media studies and the academic director of the new Center. "In particular, we will be dealing with transnational developments.
