Mediality, Aesthetics, and Materiality of Knowledge in the Pre-Modern Period

Annual Conference of the Collaborative Research Center 980 "Episteme in Motion" from July 2 to 4 in Bode Museum - Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. Figural knowledge is the theme of this year's annual conference organized by the Collaborative Research Center "Episteme in Motion" (SFB 980) at Freie Universität. The conference will address how knowledge in the pre-modern that was constructed in concrete objects, sculptures, texts, or music was transformed. The conference is being held in cooperation with the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and will take place July 2 to 4 in the Bode Museum on the Museum Island in Berlin. The meeting is open to the public and offers an extensive program of lectures and short guided tours featuring selected exhibits. What role do materials and different media have in the transmission of knowledge? How do different cultural influences intersect in concrete objects? How does such embodied knowledge change experiences, social practices, or teaching traditions? How do new traditions of knowledge emerge? This conference, conceptualized and organized by Anne Eusterschulte, Professor of the History of Philosophy, and Klaus Krüger, Professor of Art History, both of Freie Universität Berlin, aims to address the role of different media and materials for such transfers of knowledge. The space of the museum makes it possible to not only discuss "figural knowledge" but also to experience objects with the senses.
