On June 13, the Technische Universität Ilmenau will open its doors for the Youth University. Participants, young people in grades 7 to 9, can expect an exciting day full of experiments, eye-opening experiences and real hands-on science. Anyone who would like to get a taste of real university life on the TU Ilmenau campus in the summer semester of 2025 - whether whole school classes or individual young people - can register online: www.tu-ilmenau.de/kju.
After "matriculating" at the Youth University, the boys and girls in grades 7 to 9 start their journey of discovery across the campus together: in small groups, they visit exciting hands-on stations, laboratories and adventure activities and meet real scientists and students. Afterwards, they take part in an age-appropriate, entertaining lecture given by "real" professors from TU Ilmenau.
Prof. Stefan Krischok’s lecture is about the "Physics of Ball Sports", in which the physicist takes a close look at table tennis. The boys and girls will learn why a ball with a spin flies differently than when it does not rotate on its own axis, what "recoil" means and how the angle of impact affects the trajectory.
Prof. Peter Scharff demonstrates in spectacular experiments how and why things light up, burn or glow - from candle flames and sparklers to mysterious light reactions. Together, the young students discover that there is a lot of interesting chemistry behind the colorful flames, glowing materials and sparkling effects.
