Researchers at the Clinic for Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine provide concrete measurement data for the first time How high is the training effect for users of electric bicycles, also called pedelecs? What positive effects on health can be expected? Scientists from the Department of Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine at Hannover Medical School (MHH) investigated these questions in a study that lasted almost three years. Their research results have now been published in the journal BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine. For their study, the researchers analyzed data from 1250 pedelec riders and 629 users of conventional bicycles nationwide between 2017 and 2020. However, the riders were not only surveyed. "In our study, we analyzed 58,833 trips by e-bikers and cyclists and measured heart rates and speeds in each case. Unlike other large e-bike studies, this is the first time we have also prospectively collected actual measurement data, not just surveyed riders," explains Uwe Tegtbur, Director of the Clinic for Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine.
