The Beautiful Face of Modernity
Public Conference on Images of Beauty, Beautification, and Beauty Ideals in China, Korea, and Japan on November 26 and 27, 2016, at Freie Universität Berlin. ' 402/2016 from Nov 18, 2016 An interdisciplinary conference to be held at Freie Universität on November 26 and 27, 2016, will address how social change is reflected in body images, beauty practices, and beauty ideals in Japan, Korea, and China. Social scientists from Germany and abroad will discuss the phenomenon of body standards and beauty standards. The conference is public, and admission is free. "Attractiveness is increasingly regarded as an indispensable requirement in professional life. Cosmetic surgery is undergoing a boom in Korea, in China baifumei - the rich white beauty - is an ideal, and Japanese youth are torn between subculture aesthetics and social norms," says Dr. Anett Dippner (Center for Area Studies, Freie Universität), who along with Prof. Eun-Jeung Lee from the Institute of Korean Studies organized the conference. These are all aspects of a phenomenon that will be addressed for the first time in the context of an international, interdisciplinary framework.
