For over 20 years, the non-governmental organization Engineers Without Borders has been dedicated to global development cooperation. Health, nutrition and also educational and development opportunities depend crucially on a reliable water supply. This is why many of Engineers Without Borders’ projects focus on ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all people. Together with local partner organizations and in close cooperation with local people, the engineers develop and build cisterns, wells, water pipes, field irrigation systems, water disinfection systems and sanitary facilities.

In his lecture at the TU Ilmenau Bürgercampus, Sebastian Hübner from the Ilmenau regional group of Engineers Without Borders will present the most important building blocks for successful cooperation using the example of specific development projects and will also shed light on the complex interrelationships between work at home and abroad. One current project is the construction of a photovoltaic system in a school center in Uganda, Africa. Launched in February 2022 near the capital Kampala, the project is now nearing successful completion. In Ilmenau itself, the regional group launched the Repariertreff at the end of 2014. Sebastian Hübner describes how the engineers in this volunteer project make everyday objects functional again instead of allowing them to be thrown away.
