Earth Sciences - Dec 22, 2020
Each seismic wave that travels through the Earth's crust slightly changes this layer. Cutting-edge sensor technology now allows us to re-evaluate risks such as landslides or the stability of bridges and buildings. Céline Hadziioannou of Universität Hamburg coordinates the European-wide development of new methods for observing the Earth. The European Union is providing the network with approximately €4 million in funding over a 4-year period.
Environment - Dec 1, 2020

Twelve million euros for research on the exchange of energy between the ocean and the atmosphere Universität Hamburg and the University of Bremen successfully entered the second CRC/Transregio funding phase The German Research Foundation has granted second-phase funding for a joint-project between Universität Hamburg (coordination) and the University of Bremen, alongside other partners.

Neurosciences, astroparticle physics, and molecular biology: Universität Hamburg granted three ERC Starting Grants, important funding from the European Research Council. Researchers awarded a total of approximately ¤4.4 million. Projects are scheduled to start in 2021.

Health - Jun 25, 2020

How much do people trust the new normal? A representative study headed by the Hamburg Center for Health Economics (HCHE) at Universität Hamburg shows that only 44.4% of those surveyed in Europe condone the speed with which coronavirus-related restrictions were lifted.

Environment - Jan 9, 2020

One major consequence of global warming is the rising sea level. A study conducted at Universität Hamburg's Cluster of Excellence for climate research CLICCS now shows: if we assume that sea-level rise is the most critical effect of climate change, then it is not only more sensible, but also less expensive, to set a maximum limit for sea-level rise that corresponds to the two-degree target, rather than a temperature-based target.

Health - Nov 23, 2020

The research team simulated various lock-down scenarios intended to protect public health and the economy Simulations Strengthen Greater Protection for High-Risk Groups - ly population facilitates a large reduction in mortality and, at the same time, slight economic consequences," says Martin Spindler, co-author of the study and professor of statistics at the University's Faculty of Business.

Life Sciences - Aug 17, 2020

In some regions the Planaxis sulcatus sea snail produces larvae while in others they produce further-developed offspring. A research team headed by Benedikt Wiggering and Matthias Glaubrecht from the Center of Natural History (CeNak) at Universität Hamburg have now proven for the first time that the animals in question are indeed one and the same species and have thus adapted brilliantly to living conditions. Their study was published in the journal BMC Evolutionary Biology.

Administration - Mar 13, 2020

Due to spread of the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), the start of the summer semester 2020 has been postponed from 1 April to 20 April. Until then, all University buildings such as libraries, museums and collections, the Regional Computing Center, and the Sportpark will remain closed to the public.

With the "Tricontinental Teacher Training" project, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) will support the internationalization of teacher training at Universität Hamburg from 2020. Over the coming three years, Universität Hamburg (project lead) will cooperate with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (USA) and the University of Education Winneba (Ghana) within a trilateral network to implement an exchange program for trainee teachers and instructors at all three participating universities. The DAAD will support the project with funding totaling around ¤273.000.
