The United Nations acknowledges the humanitarian aid that many millions of people around the world depend on, for example as a result of natural disasters, war, and recently even the coronavirus pandemic, with an annual day of recognition on 19 August. Dr Steffi Marung’s research at Leipzig University includes the history of international aid. She says that the tension between the deand re-politicisation of humanitarian aid has increased since the 1970s.
