Today, the University is celebrating the topping-out ceremony for its new guest house at Feldbrunnenstraße 72 in the Eimsbüttel district. The University’s president Hauke Heekeren and science senator Katharina Fegebank are opening the event with words of welcome. The guest house is scheduled to open its door in 2024.
The new building is right next to the Museum am Rothenbaum-Kulturen der Künste der Welt (MARKK) and thus central to the main campus at Von-Melle-Park. Its 63 apartments will house international doctoral researchers, visiting scholars, and newly appointed professors from abroad.
University president Hauke Heekeren: -Today’s topping-out ceremony is a milestone for a more international Universität Hamburg. My recent encounters in Japan and Taiwan showed me once again how important it is to build bridges. International networking and research activities as well as the appointment of international researchers are an indispensable part of our successful performance as a university of excellence. With its 63 apartments, the guest house will not only offer housing to researchers from all over the world; it will also be a temporary home centrally located near the campus. The guest house is part of our forward-looking campus development and it has a positive impact on the entire city and its scientific landscape. I thank everyone who made this project possible.-
Science senator Katharina Fegebank added: -In the middle of Hamburg, international visiting scholars can both research and live. The new Gästehaus der Universität Hamburg will thus become a central location of openness and international dialogue. Scientific pursuit thrives on exchange beyond borders and the location in Feldbrunnenstraße is ideal for this-right next to the University’s campus around Rothenbaumchaussee. The guest house makes it clear that scientific pursuit is part of the urban community. I congratulate everyone involved on this fantastic building project.-
About the Gästehaus
The 63 apartments and common rooms will be built over 8 floors and 3,652 square meters according to plans by the Swiss architectural firm Buchner Bründler Architekten AG based in Basel. Different meeting spaces are designed to encourage academic exchange between the international residents. Universität Hamburg is the building contractor.
The new Gästehaus will add to the existing Gästehaus der Universität Hamburg in Rothenbaumschaussee, built in 1963. The 39 apartments, 5 two-room apartments, and 4 studio apartments there will continue to be run by the Global Science Foundation.
