RWTH Partners in Research Project on AI in City Administration

Consortium Funded by Federal Ministry of Education and Research

RWTH Aachen University, in collaboration with the City of Aachen, the University of Cologne, and Trier University of Applied Sciences, has embarked on an innovative research project titled "P2Broker - Public Private Broker for Secure AI-Supported Municipal Administration." At RWTH, Professor Martina Ziefle’s Chair of Communication Science is spearheading this initiative.

The project’s goal is to explore the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in enhancing administrative processes within the City of Aachen, starting with the city’s bulk trash pickup services.

Cities and municipalities face significant challenges in implementing cutting-edge technologies due to limited experience with digital transformation, the complexity of change management, and unpredictable legal, organizational, and social implications - particularly concerning citizen privacy and data protection.

To address these challenges, the interdisciplinary consortium is developing a concept for digital contracts specifically tailored to bulk waste management. This crucial municipal service must navigate diverse formal, organizational, ecological, and communicative requirements. An AI-supported chatbot system will be introduced to streamline public communication while offering a novel service: brokering well-preserved used furniture. This solution aims to serve as a model for other administrative services in the future.
