Science Conference on October 2, 2018, at Freie Universität with Concluding Public Lecture and Discussion
No 233/2018 from Sep 12, 2018
The Berlin-Brandenburg research platform BB3R is holding a science symposium on October 2, 2018, at Freie Universität Berlin to mark the conclusion of its funding by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. "3R" stands replacement, reduction, and refinement. The idea is to replace research using animals with alternative experiments, to reduce the number of animals used in research, and to reduce animal suffering in experiments still requiring animals. The symposium will be concluded with a public lecture by Peter Kunzmann from the foundation of the veterinary college Tierärztliche Hochschule Hannover to be followed with a discussion addressing which animal experiments can be carried out. The lecture will start at 6 p.m. and admission is free. Advance registration is requested by email to: vivian.kral [at] fu-berlin (p) de. The conference is being organized by Freie Universität Berlin in cooperation with Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz.
The aim of the research platform BB3R, which was founded in 2014, is to bundle the special regional competencies in the field of biomedical work techniques and test procedures, to systematically promote research on alternative methods, and to establish these methods in scientific institutions. In the integrated research training group "Innovations in 3R Research - Genetic Engineering, Tissue Engineering and Bioinformatics" doctoral candidates have an opportunity to be trained systematically and comprehensively in techniques to spare animals in research and to incorporate these approaches in their scientific work.
In addition to Freie Universität Berlin the involved partners include Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, Universität Potsdam, the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, and the Zuse Institute Berlin. Scientists from other research institutions are also associated with the platform. In 2015 the first university professorship in Berlin that is devoted to research on alternatives to animal experiments was set up at Freie Universität Berlin as part of the BB3R platform.
With the final conference "Rethinking Biomedical Science," the scientists want to show that the phasing out of federal funding will not lead to an end to this research, which is to be continued intensively through the various forms of cooperation that were established through the platform.
