Party meeting place Platz der Göttinger Sieben

Dear students and staff of the University,

for some weeks now, the Platz der Göttinger Sieben between the SUB and the ZHG has been increasingly used as a meeting place on weekends, most recently by up to 1,000 people at a time.

As a University, we would like to offer our members and the citizens of Göttingen a stress-free opportunity to gather - after the months behind us. However, we are very concerned about the developments of the last few days: Yesterday, there were again physical confrontations, fireworks were set off and the coronavirus distance rules were disregarded. The police had to intervene several times and the medical emergency services had to be called. And despite the availability of rubbish containers and a toilet facility in the ZHG, which can be used throughout the night, the pollution in and around the square is also increasing dramatically.

Please help us tonight, but also in the nights to come, to keep this meeting place a place for everyone to celebrate happily and loudly, but also responsibly and safely, and use your networks or your example to spread this message.

  • Take care of yourselves and each other.
  • Please celebrate, but avoid excessive alcohol consumption when doing so.
  • Use toilets and rubbish containers.
  • It is forbidden to enter the University buildings (with the exception of the toilets in the ZHG).
  • Barbecues and fireworks are prohibited.
  • Music in moderation is okay. Please leave too large or too loud equipment at home.
  • Follow the coronavirus guideline: in public spaces outside (no distance, no mouth-nose-coverings) with a maximum of 50 people.

In the coming week we will analyse the situation and take measures in consultation with the city and the police to ensure a sustainable safe atmosphere on our University campus. I cannot rule out that this could also lead to a closure of the square if the situation does not improve significantly. I therefore appeal to every visitor to make sure that the cheerful celebrations on our University campus do not get out of hand.

Wherever you spend this summer evening, take care. Thank you for reading this message, even if you are not directly affected. Please also help us spread this message to as many people as possible through your social media channels - for the good of all!

Best regards

Professor Metin Tolan

University President
