The two-time Oscar winning director Bill Guttentag will visit Freie Universitšt Berlin on June 8 and 9. On June 8 he will give a talk about the film industry in Hollywood and answer questions from the audience. On June 9 he will present his documentary film Nanking. The film focuses on the war crimes conducted by the Japanese occupiers of the Chinese capital Nanking at the end of 1937 and beginning of 1938. Nearly 370,000 people were murdered, and tens of thousands of women - with estimates ranging from 20,000 to 80,000 - were raped. To this day, the extent of the crime is not recognized by Japan. The way it is mentioned in Japanese schoolbooks led to a dispute with China just a few months ago. Following the screening there will be a panel discussion with Bill Guttentag to address the topic and the film.

The discussants in the panel discussion on June 9 will include the professor of theater studies, Gertrud Koch, the professor of Chinese studies, Mechthild Leutner, and the professor of law, Klaus Hoffmann-Holland, all of Freie Universitšt Berlin. The discussion will be moderated by the professor of economics, Irwin L. Collier of Freie Universitšt Berlin. Admission to both events is free, and no advance registration is necessary.

Bill Guttentag, born in 1958, is a lecturer in organizational behavior at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He is also a screenwriter, director, and film producer. In his talk on June 8 entitled "The Power Structure and Dynamics of Contemporary Hollywood," he will present the entrainment industry as one of the largest and most important industries in the world. According to Guttentag, it is an industry characterized by tremendous opportunities and major uncertainties alike.
