People have many questions about organ transplants: Which organs can be donated after death’ What requirements must donors fulfill’ Is there an age limit’ Why is it important to keep a record of one’s decision to donate organs’ And how are the recipients of donated organs selected’ There are not only many questions on this much-discussed topic, but also many different, sometimes conflicting opinions. The different opinions are often expressed emotionally and obviously unsettle many people: The number of organ donations in Germany is low compared to other European countries.

With her lecture at the TU Ilmenau Citizens’ Campus , the deputy director of the Ilm-Kreis-Kliniken Arnstadt-Ilmenau, Dr. med. Heike Schlegel-Höfner, invites the audience to deal with the controversial topic of organ transplantation. She knows that the very personal question of one’s own willingness to donate organs and tissue after death is not easy to answer for many people: uncertainty and fears are too high, because the topic is closely linked to one’s own death and the death of loved ones. According to the intensive care physician, this makes it all the more important to discuss the pros and cons objectively and exchange opinions.
