With a joint booth at the Garching Campus, the Munich Excellence Clusters will also present exciting connections and fascinating insights into the world of science at the Open Day.

On the open day hosted by "Sendung mit der Maus," companies, laboratories, workshops, factories, museums and other institutions from all over Germany will open doors that are otherwise closed to the public. This year TUM is taking part with several activities.

Please note: most scheduled activities require advance registration. Details can be found on the linked information pages for the individual programs.

A wide variety of activities await mouse fans aged 7-13 at the Munich Institute of Biomedical Engineering (MIBE) : giant blubber bubbles, magic writing and fireballs, as MIBE presents a chemical show featuring spectacular mixtures and reactions! But wait - where have the chocolate eggs gone? To track down the chocolate thief, the young detectives will visit several exciting stations, from construction set soldering and a model made of 23,000 Lego blocks to an X-ray machine for Kinder Surprise eggs.

Reservations for the Mouse Day at the Research Neutron Source Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II) are now closed. However, adults and children are also invited to the FRM II open house in the neighboring Science Congress Center Munich (GALILEO) on October 3.

In a tour of the Research Neutron Source, guests can peek into the reactor basin and learn more about the non-destructive investigation of materials with neutrons. There will be plenty of information available as well as informative talks, films, painting and handicraft activities, games and Lego models of scientific instruments. FRM II researchers will also be on hand to take questions. Registration is required only for the reactor tours (adults).

Mouse activities (fully booked) (WDR)

Where will we obtain our energy in the future? What is a quantum computer? What causes Alzheimer’s disease? And what happened after the Big Bang? Mouse fans four years of age and older can learn the answers to these and other questions from the Munich Excellence Clusters e-conversion, MCQST, SyNergy und ORIGINS. They can choose to build batteries using fruit and vegetables, visit a research lab with virtual reality glasses, discover nerve cells under a microscope or make fridge magnets with galaxy images to take home.

"Me and my bacteria - we’re inseparable!" Here mouse fans aged 6-10 will learn about who is living on and in us and what these tiny creatures get up to all day long - and why we make a perfect combination. The kids will immerse themselves in the world of microbiology and become little researchers. They’ll see surprising things under the microscope, discover all kinds of bacteria and parasites and be amazed at the sheer variety. Children must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult and should bring along a snack.

How will we get from place to place in the future? Maybe we’ll travel by Hyperloop - a high-speed train on which a TUM team is doing important research. Our students Domenik Radeck and Wonyoung Choi were featured on WDR’s 50th anniversary Sendung mit der Maus broadcast (YouTube) in 2021, where they explained the concept behind the future Hyperloop train, which will speed through a tube at close to the speed of sound.
