Online expert discussion "Five years since the teacher training reforms - a provisional assessment"

The reform of the teacher training system began in the winter semester 2015/16. The study programs with state examinations were replaced by the teaching-oriented bachelor’s and later master’s degree programs. In an online expert discussion held on December 3, 2020, a panel of experts gave a provisional assessment together with Baden-Württemberg’s Minister for Science, Research and the Arts Theresia Bauer.

"The new teaching degree program in this state works. Five years after they were introduced, the bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in teacher training have proven their worth", said the Minister for Science, Research and the Arts Theresia Bauer. "We’re still working on the content objectives of the reform, to give teachers of the future the best possible preparation for a school of diversity and for the digital world. I am also convinced that we need to focus more on the teacher’s personality as part of the study program. How can students learn the virtues of lifelong learning so they can deal with new challenges and topics? How do they become experts in cooperation both inside and outside the school? This is something which we will carry on discussing."

Professor Martin Fix, Rector at the Ludwigsburg University of Education, emphasized in his contribution that the cooperation which has been built up successfully within the Schools of Education now needs to be consolidated and established more broadly.

After presentations on the topics of digitization, inclusion and institutionalization in teacher training, a lively discussion began.

Sat next to Mrs Bauer on the virtual podium were representatives from the different teacher training universities in the state, including Prof. Christine Sälzer, Professor of Educational Science at the University of Stuttgart and Director of the Professional School of Education Stuttgart-Ludwigsburg, as well as a teacher at a comprehensive school and a teaching degree student.

The aim of the discussion was also to continue the exchange between the Ministry of Science and the teacher training universities in Baden-Württemberg on issues relating to teacher training. Among other things, the topics of discussion included the regional-specific developments of the individual sites and the possibilities for evaluating good teacher training.

The event was organized by the Professional School of Education Stuttgart-Ludwigsburg (PSE).

The Professional School of Education

At the beginning of 2016, the universities of Stuttgart and Hohenheim, the Ludwigsburg University of Education, the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design and the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart joined forces to further develop teacher training in the greater Stuttgart-Ludwigsburg area in a more profession-oriented way. The partners aim to improve harmonization and strengthen links between the science courses being taught and the methodology of science teaching, educational science and teaching practice.
