As the 2024/25 winter semester gets underway, the TU Ilmenau is welcoming new students to its matriculation ceremony on October 12. This year, almost eleven percent more students have enrolled at TU Ilmenau than last year. At this year’s matriculation ceremony, TU Ilmenau will also start a tradition and plant a tree for each new student.
With a festive matriculation ceremony on Saturday, October 12, in the Humboldtbau in the Auditorium Maximum, the university’s largest lecture hall, TU Ilmenau will welcome the new students who will start one of the university’s 19 Bachelor’s or 26 Master’s degree programs in the winter semester 2024/25. For the current winter semester, the university has recorded almost 11 percent more students on its Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs than in the previous year. As students can still enrol at TU Ilmenau until the end of October, all figures are still provisional and the final statistics will be available at the beginning of November.
The number of international students in particular remains high. For international prospective students, studying engineering in Germany as the Öland of engineers" continues to be very attractive. With its numerous engineering degree courses and its excellent reputation, the university therefore meets with high demand for its degree courses. In addition, studying at TU Ilmenau opens the door to an academic career and a doctorate at the university. This also attracts qualified and talented prospective students from Germany and abroad.
"We are naturally very pleased about the popularity of the engineering degree courses in particular. Unfortunately, the number of first-year students in STEM subjects is declining nationwide. However, technological progress and economic growth are inconceivable without engineers," says Prof. Anja Geigenmüller, Vice President for Teaching and Learning at TU Ilmenau. "In response to this, we have realigned our concepts for study and career guidance, revised concepts and events and joined national networks to keep STEM degree programs attractive and to show young people of today’s generation the diverse and attractive career opportunities of studying engineering."
TU Ilmenau will be starting a tradition at this year’s matriculation ceremony: Starting this year, a tree will be planted for each new matriculation opposite the Humboldtbau, where the matriculation ceremony will take place - the respective tree of the year. The Tree of the Year 2024 is the European service tree. The tree planting stands for a spirit of sustainability, which TU Ilmenau is committed to in many ways in research and teaching.
