Prof. Martin Winter, scientific leader of MEET Battery Research Center of the University of Münster and Helmholtz Institute Münster of Forschungszentrum Jülich.
Prof. Martin Winter, chemist from Münster, Germany, has been awarded the Alessandro-Volta-Medal for his pioneering research in electrochemistry. The Electrochemical Society (ECS) awards the prize every two years for outstanding research work in this field. The scientific leader of MEET Battery Research Center of the University of Münster and Helmholtz Institute Münster of Forschungszentrum Jülich accepted the award on the morning of October 9, 2020 at the virtual ECS Meeting.
The ECS cites the “outstanding achievements in advanced battery materials and cell designs, and exemplary leadership in national and international cooperative research programs? as the reasons for the award to Martin Winter. He already published more than 700 articles in peer-reviewed journals, books and conference proceedings.
The Volta-Medal-Award is endowed with a silver medal and 2,000 US dollars. The international prize is named after the Italian physicist Alessandro Volta, one of the founders of electrochemical science and inventor of the battery.
About Martin Winter
Martin Winter has been researching in the field of electrochemical energy storage and conversion for 30 years. His focus is on the development of new materials, components and cell design for lithium ion, lithium-metal and alternative battery systems. Martin Winter currently holds a professorship for “Materials Science, Energy and Electrochemistry? at the Institute of Physical Chemistry at the University of Münster, Germany.
He is founder and scientific director of MEET Battery Research Center at Münster University and of Helmholtz-Institute Münster (HI MS) “Ionics in Energy Storage’, a division of Forschungszentrum Jülich. Martin Winter has been leading the application for the Research Fab Battery Cell, which is being built up in Münster since 2019.
He is also member of the "Electromobility" expert council of the North Rhine-Westphalian state government and spokesperson for German Battery Research (Federal Ministry of Education and Research).
