To conclude the 2024 GROMADA summer school program, the atrium in the State and University Library Carl von Ossietzky will transform into a fictive courtroom on 30 August 2024. The participating students will take part in a moot court on environmental war crimes and ecocide in the Russian-Ukraine war.
The ongoing war in Ukraine is not only a tragedy, a catastrophe, and misfortune for everyone affected by it; it is also a huge problem for the environment in the region. The incidents related to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station and the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam form the heart of the moot court that will conclude this year’s GROMADA summer school program in Hamburg.
Real scenarios and satellite images from Ukraine as well as scientific data will be assessed. The moot court, in which Ukraine takes Russia to court, will be moderated by the prize-winning TV journalist and war reporter Katrin Eigendorf as well as the presiding judge of the Hamburg constitutional court, Sigrid Boysen.
Visitors and members of the media are cordially invited to attend the
GROMADA moot court project
on Friday, 30 August 2024 at 9 am
in the atrium of the State and University Library Carl von Ossietzky (enter via Grindelallee at the corner of Edmund-Siemers-Allee).
The event is taking place in English and gives the public an opportunity to discuss with experts. During the lunch break, which includes a small refreshment, visitors can also see the multimedia exhibition on the Russian-Ukraine conflict in the context of international law in the atrium’s gallery. The exhibition includes international law papers written by 14 law students supervised by Anne Dienelt and illustrated by the artist Marlin Beringer.
GROMADA is an Erasmus+ project run by different European universities and NGOs, including Odessa National University; the Universities of Lund, Hamburg, and Copenhagen; the NGOs Conflict and Environment Conservatory (CEOBS) and Systasis; and the company Web2Learn. Together with ELSA Hamburg e.V., Greenpeace, the German Red Cross, and the Ukrainian Red Cross Society, GROMADA is organizing the GROMADA summer school program in Hamburg from 25 August to 1 September 2024. The moot court is organized jointly by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation and the Heinrich Böll Stiftung Hamburg e.V. (funded by the Landeszentrale für politische Bildung Hamburg) and the State and University Library Carl von Ossietzky.
