Political scientist Peter Rutland from the United States to hold public lecture on June 4, 2019, as part of the Richard Löwenthal Lectures at Freie Universität Berlin
No 119/2019 from May 08, 2019
Professor Peter Rutland, renowned American political scientist, will present ideas about what Russia will be like when Vladimir Putin’s term as President of the Russian Federation ends in 2024. His lecture "Imagining Russia after Putin" on June 4 is part of the Richard Löwenthal Lecture series put on by the Institute for East European Studies, Freie Universität Berlin. The Russian expert’s talk is free and open to the public. The event will be held in English. Vladimir Putin has held the office of President of the Russian Federation since May 2000, with the exception of the four years from 2008 to 2012 when he was Prime Minister. On March 18, 2018, he was elected for his fourth term, which ends in 2024. Who will take his place? Will "Putinism" continue to live on after Putin’s presidency? Professor Rutland will address these questions in his lecture.
Peter Rutland is a professor of government at Wesleyan University, USA. His research focuses on the economy, politics, and nationalism in present-day Russia and the former Soviet Union.
The Richard Löwenthal Lectures are a public lecture series at the Institute for East European Studies, Freie Universität Berlin. The Institute regularly invites well-known scholars working on Eastern Europe and post-Soviet regions to participate in the series. The series is named after the German political scientist Richard Löwenthal (1908-1991), who was a professor at Freie Universität Berlin from 1961 to 1974. He researched totalitarianism, National Socialism, and political developments in Eastern Europe.
