German Federal Ministry for Education and Research to Fund Research Center / Project begin: April 2017

‘ 042/2017 from Mar 06, 2017

The newly established Maria Sibylla Merian Research Center will investigate problems of social, political, religious, and cultural coexistence in Latin America and the Caribbean. Seven research institutions are cooperating in the project, which is being coordinated by social scientists at Freie Universität. The participating researchers will take a comparative perspective and will take into account the links between Latin America and the Caribbean and other parts of the world. The headquarters of the new research center is located in São Paulo. Partners in Argentina and Mexico will contribute to consolidating and expanding activities in the multilingual area of Latin America and the Caribbean. Presumably The preliminary phase will run for three years.

"The Center offers a vital space for the transnational production and circulation of knowledge," says Sergio Costa of Freie Universität, who is the spokesperson for the consortium. Within the project, research is being conducted symmetrically between the institutions and researchers from different disciplines and countries.

In addition to Freie Universität Berlin, the other participating institutions are the University of Cologne and the Ibero-American Institute of the Stiftung-Preußischer-Kulturbesitz in Germany, Universidade de São Paulo and the Centro Brasileiro de Análise e Planejamento in Brazil, the Instituto de Investigaciones en Humanidades y Ciencias Sociales at Universidad La Plata and Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas in Argentina, and El Colegio de México in Mexico.

The research center "Conviviality in Unequal Societies: Perspectives from Latin America" was approved for funding by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research within its framework program for establishing research centers in Asia, Africa, and Latin America and the Caribbean.
