Automatica sprint: TUM hosts Hightech-Summit

How can artificial intelligence (AI) deliver lasting benefits in our everyday lives and the working world? How will intelligent robotics, as the bridge between AI and machines, revolutionize industry? And which technologies will prevail in the long term? These questions are addressed by munich_i, a brand-new robotics and AI platform of the Munich School of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MSRM) of the Technical University of Munich (TUM), to be held as part of the online trade fair automatica sprint. The core element of munich_i is a Hightech-Summit on June 22, featuring prominent international guest speakers.

Automatica sprint is an independent offshoot of automatica , the world’s leading marketplace for automated smart production, usually held every two years at the Messe München trade fair facility. Due to the pandemic, this year’s edition will take place as an online event from June 22 to 24.

The MSRM will be represented at automatica sprint by the munich_i hightech platform , organized by MSRM in close cooperation with automatica and Messe München. Under the theme "intelligence empowering tomorrow", munich_i offers a platform for the ideas of the most acclaimed and promising robotics and AI pioneers while promoting knowledge transfer and collaboration with researchers, policy makers, industry and start-ups.

The centerpiece of munich_i is the digital Hightech-Summit , where more than 20 top experts in robotics and AI from various scientific disciplines and renowned companies will get together in a think tank on June 22. In more than 20 presentations, the online attendees will gain insights into robotics and AI technologies that are relevant today and will continue to have an impact in the future.

Speakers invited by munich_i directors Prof. Sami Haddadin, the director of the MSRM, and Prof. Alena Buyx, the director of the Chair for Ethics in Medicine and Health Technologies at TUM, include Prof. Marco Hutter of ETH Zürich, Prof. Oussama Khatib of Stanford University and Prof. Yoshihiko Nakamura of the University of Tokyo. Also taking part are prominent personalities from industry such as Dr. Hannes Ametsreiter, the CEO of Vodafone Germany, Prof. Jürgen Grotepass from Huawei and Dr. Reinhard Ploss, the CEO of Infineon Technologies. The high-tech summit will be opened by Bavarian minister president Dr. Markus Söder, the official patron of munich_i.

Another highlight of munich_i, complementing this one-day Hightech-Summit, is the special AI.Society digital space , where around 30 robotics and AI laboratories at TUM, start-ups and MSRM partners from the Munich area will offer insights into their research work. This special show will be available online for the entire duration of automatica sprint. A list of the participating TUM labs is available here.

In the month leading up to the automatica sprint event, 11 academic teams will participate in the Robothon developer competition. The task is to overcome an unsolved challenge in the fight against environmental pollution: How can a robot be used to solve and simplify the task of dismantling and separating e-waste? An independent jury of scientists and business leaders will award the prizes at the high-tech summit on June 22.

Visitors to munich_i can attend an online workshop to train for a "robot driver’s license". It includes an introduction to robotics, discussions, exercises in small virtual groups and demonstrations based on real-world examples. The workshops will be offered twice daily from June 22 to 24. Advance registration is possible from the beginning of June via the automatica sprint website. Attendance is limited.
