A Joint Project between Freie Universität Berlin and University of Cape Coast

A collaborative project between Freie Universität Berlin and University of Cape Coast in Ghana focuses on equal opportunities within a university context. Over a four-year period, the two institutions plan to engage in a reciprocal learning process with the goal of developing and implementing equal opportunity measures together at the Ghanaian university. The first phase of the project involves University of Cape Coast representatives receiving training at their home institution and establishing structures to support equal opportunities. In preparation, a delegation from Ghana will be in Berlin from October 21 to 25 for a workshop with Freie Universität members who deal with equal opportunity issues.
The Gender and Diversity Professor at the Otto Suhr Institute for Political Science, the Central Women’s Representative for Freie Universität, as well as the Professor of Physical Geography and former Vice President of Freie Universität responsible for equal opportunity topics are all involved in the project. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is providing financial support for the project through its "Dialog on Innovative Higher Education Research" program with universities in developing countries.
As part of the cooperation between Freie Universität and University of Cape Coast, the project will create an equal opportunity action plan and a training program for equal opportunity advocates at the Ghanaian university. Freie Universität’s two-year certification program "FUTURA" will be able to provide some direction for the project, as an established training tool for how to deal with gender and inequality at the workplace. The second part of the project involves a pilot phase with Kenyatta University in Nairobi, where best practice examples from the first phase will be put to use.
