D he use of electrical energy shapes our lives. But even though laws, standards and technology ensure a high level of safety when dealing with electricity, the question of risks and protection against electrical accidents and fire damage arises again and again. It is estimated that 50 times more people die in electrical accidents at home or at work than in other accidents.

The speaker at the TU Ilmenau Citizens’ Campus, Dr. Holger Schau, was a university lecturer for electrical networks and systems at the TU Ilmenau and was involved in electrical safety in the expert committee for safety and accident research of the Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies (VDE). In his lecture, Dr. Schau focuses on the most common sources and scenarios of accidents: faulty temporary electrical installations, the use of water pumps during floods, lithium-ion batteries or small photovoltaic systems on your own balcony. And he also explains how such risks can be reduced.
