“Books under suspicion” exhibition opens at Göttingen State and University Library

Exhibition informs about loot plundered by the Nazis at the University Library (pug) A new exhibition running at the Göttingen State and University Library (SUB) documents the historical background, methodology and results of the research project “Investigating and reclaiming loot stolen by the Nazis at Göttingen State and University Library“. The exhibition entitled “Books under suspicion“ presents information boards and showcases archival documents and books that were acquired by the Göttingen University Library between the years 1933 and 1950. The exhibition opens on Friday, May 13, 2011 and runs until July 10, 2011. The exhibition was created by the SUB’s librarians and scientists and funded by the Göttingen University Association. The looting that took place under the National Socialists was not only limited to art, but also included books in vast numbers. Many of these books were written by banned or dissolved organisations and their followers, but also by emigrants or fellow Jewish citizens. In the wake of the Nazi regime’s expansion projects in the occupied territories, numerous “displaced“ books were stolen – looted literature.
