No 039/2020 from Feb 21, 2020

Joint press release issued by Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technischen Universität Berlin and Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin

The Berlin University Alliance congratulates the non-university research institutions that have come together to form the Berlin Research 50. The founding of the new alliance sends a strong signal of Berlin’s role as a hub for science and research. In many ways, it is the logical next step for the capital’s partnerships in terms of both their development as institutions and the advancement of science and knowledge. It also complements the efforts that the Berlin University Alliance has already initiated as a consortium between Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and Technische Universität Berlin along with Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin.

Today’s challenges require expertise from a wide variety of subjects and disciplines - with students, doctoral researchers, and professors from many different institutions. Cooperation across institutional boundaries is thus more important than ever. The Berlin University Alliance, which was selected by the German government in its Excellence Strategy competition as the only consortium of Excellence, takes crossing institutional boundaries seriously.

Nowhere else in Germany is there such a wealth and variety of disciplines and degree programs. Berlin also stands out due to its high-quality research infrastructure that facilitates remarkable performance and results. However, it takes an alliance to hone that potential, to create networks, and to ensure progress. This special "Berlin way" of promoting and doing research is obviously catching on in the Berlin metropolitan region, as more and more partners come to recognize its advantages. The newly founded coalition of an initial 41 non-university research institutions speaks to the power that this synergy strategy has to bring about change, which is especially significant for science, research, and education.
