Exhibition on the 1968 Student Movement in Berlin, University Library of Freie Universität Berlin
No 306/2018 from Nov 06, 2018
An exhibition of photographs by people involved in the 1968 student movement in Berlin will open on November 8 in the University Library of Freie Universität Berlin. "Generation Revolt Now" features portraits by the British photographer Colin Robins of about 40 individuals who were either directly involved in the events of the late 1960s or were close to the student movement. The exhibition was designed by Colin Robins and was compiled in collaboration between the German Historical Institute of London and Freie Universität. The photographs were previously shown in London and Helsinki. The exhibition in Berlin will run until January 11, 2019.
Many of those portrayed were students at Freie Universität in 1968 and belonged to the circle of activists. The photographs show former members of the Socialist German Student Union (SDS), the Humanist Union (HU), the SPD, Kommune 1, and other countercultures. There are also pictures of former members of the opposition from the eastern part of Berlin who protested in 1968 against the suppression of the Prague Spring, as well as foreign students who were persecuted in their home countries and in exile in the 1960s and who were part of the Extra-Parliamentary Opposition (APO) in West Berlin. The collection of photographs on display aims to depict the breadth of attitudes and experiences that played a role in the context of the events of 1968. A slide show shows pictures of the events of 1968 from the archives of the Berlin police-historical collection and the State Security Service of the GDR. Many publications by the photographed individuals were lent from various libraries within the university library system to be included in the display.
