Dementia: Advocacy for early diagnosis declining, knowledge of risk factors expandable
The number of people with dementia is increasing. Therefore, early detection and diagnosis of the age-related disease are becoming increasingly important. Researchers at the Institute of Social Medicine, Occupational Medicine and Public Health (ISAP) at the University of Leipzig have conducted a representative survey to investigate the attitudes of people aged 60 and over toward early diagnosis of dementia: they analyzed data from two telephone surveys and compared the results.

Resistant fungal species spreads
The number of infections with the fungus Candida auris is also increasing in Germany. This is shown in a new study by research teams from Würzburg, Jena and Berlin. Despite low numbers, scientists advise precautionary measures. Among the yeasts from the Candida genus that cause infections in humans, the species Candida auris is still relatively new: this species was only described in 2009, and to date no evidence has been found before the 1990s.

Prolonging the survival of patients with gastric cancer
International study shows that treating gastric cancer with new antibody has positive effects Gastric cancer is the fifth most commonly diagnosed malignancy worldwide. It ranks a sad third in cancer-related causes of death. The reason for this is late diagnosis coupled with rapid spread of tumour cells in the body.

Innovative 3D drug screening system
Biophysicist at Göttingen University receives ERC Proof of Concept Grant Professor Timo Betz, University of Göttingen, has been awarded a Proof of Concept (PoC) grant by the European Research Council (ERC) for his -TissMec- project to develop a 3D screening system to cultivate tissue and automatically stimulate and quantify its mechanical properties.

Gamma delta T cells can fight aggressive breast cancer
Freiburg researchers discover a mechanism by which cancer cells escape the immune system. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the most aggressive and deadly form of breast cancer with limited treatment options and a high probability of recurrence. Tumor growth and relapse of TNBC are driven by breast cancer stem cells, and improved therapies that can eliminate those hardy cells are urgently needed.

How to increase the chance of survival in older patients with head and neck cancer
Should patients over the age of 70 with head and neck cancer receive aggressive combined radiotherapy and chemotherapy? This is a controversial issue among patients, their families and health professionals. A large-scale international study involving Leipzig University Hospital proves the effectiveness of this combined treatment in older patients.

Toxicity of drugs released into waterways partly depends on acidity
A study by researchers from the Universities of Tübingen and Athens has found that the toxicity of chemicals in lakes and rivers may vary by several orders of magnitude depending on the water's acidity. Professor Heinz Köhler from the University of Tübingen's Institute of Evolution and Ecology, working with colleagues from Athens and the German Environment Agency, tested the effect of 24 substances, most of which are used as drugs, on the development of fish embryos in realistic scenarios.

New treatment option for bile duct cancer
International study with participation of MHH Professor Arndt Vogel shows improved overall survival with immunotherapy New cases of bile duct cancer, also known as biliary tumours, are increasing worldwide. The chances of cure are considered poor. The standard therapy for advanced bile duct cancer has so far been based on chemotherapy with the therapeutic agents gemcitabine and cisplatin; treatment with the body's own immune defence system has been researched for years for this type of cancer.

Neutrons for better vaccines against multidrug resistant germs
Reading time 3 min. FRM II lets scientists look deep inside the structure of biomolecules Neutrons from the Research Neutron Source Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II) can be used to explore the structure of biomolecules. The most recent success: the precise analysis of a promising vaccine against multidrug resistant germs.

How to achieve a functional cure for chronic hepatitis B
More than half of people with chronic hepatitis B have a form of the disease in which the immune system almost never achieves sustained control, despite many years of treatment. According to current knowledge, those affected therefore require lifelong drug therapy. In the world's first study on the discontinuation of treatment with the common antiviral drug for the severe form called HBeAg-negative hepatitis B, scientists have shown that some patients can achieve sustained immune control if they discontinue the antiviral therapy after a certain period of time.

Components of Cytoskeleton Strengthen Effect of Sex Hormones
Researchers from Freiburg and Kiel discover that actin acts in the cell nucleus and is partly responsible for the expression of male sexual characteristics Steroid hormones, to which belong sex hormones like estrogen or testosterone, are important signaling molecules and are responsible among other things for controlling female and male phenotypic sex differentiation.

Novel Regulatory Mechanism of Blood Clotting Discovered
The glycoprotein V of the blood platelets is an important switch point for haemostasis and thrombus formation. This new finding could have great clinical potential. When our blood vessels are injured by cuts, abrasions, or bruises, it is vital that the bleeding is stopped, and the wound is sealed. This process is called hemostasis and involves two main components: First, blood platelets attach to the wound edges, form a plug and provisionally seal the injury.

Targeted computer modelling to accelerate antiviral drug development
Effective drugs against viral diseases like COVID-19 are urgently needed now and in the future. The emergence of viral mutants and yet unknown viruses could push vaccines to their limits. The DZIF scientist and bioinformatician Andreas Dräger from the University of Tübingen is working on a computer-based method that can help to accelerate the time-consuming identification and development of antiviral agents.

Milestone in pulmonary hypertension therapy
In pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), the small vessels in the lungs become increasingly narrow and obstruct the transport of blood to the lungs. A new drug can stop this change and possibly even reverse it. Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a special form of pulmonary hypertension. It occurs because the small arteries in the lungs narrow as a result of progressive changes in the blood vessels.

Receptor ’blasting’ visualised
Adhesion GPCRs are a group of G protein-coupled receptors associated with many body functions and diseases. However, they have not yet been sufficiently studied to be used for therapies. Two research groups at the Rudolf Schönheimer Institute at the Faculty of Medicine at Leipzig University have now jointly developed a technology to change this.

Artificial intelligence to help tumor immunology
Researchers want to study the environment of cancer cells in more detail. Federal Ministry of Education and Research funds project with 800,000 euros The success of cancer treatment depends not only on the type of tumor, but also on the surrounding tissue. Tumors influence it to their advantage, promoting the growth of blood vessels or fooling incoming immune cells.

New hope for treatment of rare metabolic disease
Results of a controlled clinical trial with a new drug for the treatment of X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy To date, no pharmacological treatment exists for X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy, a progressive genetic metabolic disease that damages the adrenal glands, the spinal cord and the white matter of the nervous system.

Endogenous molecule protects from life-threatening complications after stem-cell transplantation
Freiburg researchers find that an antimicrobial molecule modifies T-cell-signalling and thus attenuates overshooting immune reactions Acute Graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) is a life-threatening complication after leukemia treatment with allogeneic stem cell transplantation, i.e. the transplantation of cells from another person.

Paderborn scientist is researching new approaches to combat antibiotic-resistant germs
Dr. Adrian Keller receives Paderborn University Research Award Antibiotics are regularly used in medicine to fight bacterial infections. However, resistant germs to which drugs are unable to respond are now increasingly emerging, especially in hospitals. This is because as bacteria reproduce and further develop, their genetic material - i.e. their DNA - can change to make them resistant to antibiotics.
