Unit Laboratory Manager
Scientific Services and Support

EMBL Grenoble is seeking to recruit a Unit Laboratory Manager to support our dynamic, interdisciplinary, and international community, where cutting-edge research in biochemistry, cellular, structural and molecular biology is performed.

This position is key to ensure excellent productivity of research labs, maximal operativity of shared scientific equipment, and smooth and efficient communication with the administrative and research staff. The Unit Laboratory Manager and her/his team will work closely with Facility Managers and Laboratory Support Staff of each research group, and with the Health and Safety Officer. The Unit Laboratory Manager will report directly to the Head of EMBL Grenoble Unit.

Your Tasks

The Unit Laboratory Manager will provide and manage support of the wet-lab activities of EMBL Grenoble. From preparation of basic buffers to the sterilization of bacteria cell culture and labware. As well as the logistics of plasticware consumables.

Key roles will include, but are not limited to:

  • Management of a team of 2-3 staff members, each deputed to interact and liaise with different service representatives (building maintenance, safety officer, facility managers, purchase officer, and IT) and with the research groups (delivery of cell culture media and autoclaved labware);
  • Ensuring operativity and maintenance of shared scientific equipment, including but not limited to chromatography systems (FPLC), autoclaves, cell disruptors, (ultra)centrifuges, spectrophotometers, laminar flow hoods, and other shared scientific instrumentation;
  • Training of newcomers on shared scientific instrumentation;
  • Budget administration relative to the purchase and consumption of shared plastic and glassware, research devices (i.e. cryo-electron microscopy grids), and chemicals, also involving price negotiation with vendors;
  • Expert advice and support on staff recruitment and upgrading scientific equipment and resources.
  • General management, including common equipment ordering, common space organisation, planning and coordinating of remodelling projects.

The Unit Laboratory Manager and their team will further contribute to emerging needs of EMBL Grenoble to maintain a competitive, proficient, state-of-the-art scientific environment, also by ensuring efficient communication and logistic support to all scientists of the Unit, and serve as an interface between EMBL’s service departments (building maintenance, scientific instrument maintenance, workshops, and core facilities) and the research Groups.

Requirements

You have

  • Education and confirmed expertise in molecular/structural biology and biochemistry.
  • Previous work experience as a research technicianin the above areas of life science.
  • Proven technical, organisational, interpersonal and management skills.
  • Fluency in English and good working knowledge in French are essential.

You might also have

  • Previous experience in staff management/supervision and budget administration.
  • Knowledge of purchasing and logistics.
  • Being able to fix small issues with scientific machineries would be a plus (e.g: replacement of an UV lamp in AKTA system).
