The Institute of Turbomachinery and Flight Propulsion is pursuing research in technologies of future aero engine architectures for the next generation of aircraft. In this context, the development of turbomachinery and the integration of novel components enhancing the thermodynamic cycle take a central role, focused on environmental awareness and reduction of fossil fuel consumption. The institute follows these goals in different research frameworks and collaborative research with industry partners.

Requirements Profile
The following requirements apply for the position at offer:

  • Excellent grade degree from a university with focus on aerospace, physics or related fields o Very good and fundamental knowledge in the areas of theoretical fluid mechanics and structural mechanics as well as aero-thermal modelling o High fascination for technical/scientific problems of theoretical and numerical research o Experience in the field of numerical time-accurate flow simulation, preferably turbomachinery o Ability to approach work in an analytical, imaginative and structured way, and to work independently in research projects o Good team player and inclination towards acting in networks o Very good communication skills and ability to express yourself in spoken and written German and English language o Proficient use of common programming languages, MS-office, data storages and image processing o Ability to support the institute’s teaching in tutorials and seminars o Enjoyment of being initiative and liaising with people in the work place o Will to achieve the PhD degree (Promotion) Tasks As a research assistant you will be responsible for the coordination and technical conduction of a 4-year research project, aimed at the thermo-structural modelling of different casing architectures for axial compressors, and investigating the potential of different concepts to actively control running tip clearances in future aero engine applications. In this research project you will generate new capabilities of controlling compressor tip clearances and further increasing the efficiency of aero en-gine axial compressors by the implementation of new design approaches - and you will detail the most promising concept in more depth, in order to enable a reliable preliminary design of compressors featuring active tip clearance control. The project is highly innovative, will generate fundamental knowledge about the methodologic handling and capturing of thermo-structural effects, which are increasingly dominant in compressors, and the collaborative frame with a prestigious industry partner will give insight to future technology requirements.

The project will be carried out at the Institute of Turbomachinery and Flight Propulsion, bearing the following tasks:
  • Research on the fundamental effects of different concepts to allow the active control of running tip clearances in modern axial compressors, with an emphasis on compressor casing design options and associated steady and transient behavior.
  • Investigation of effective means to control the thermo-structural behavior of different casing concepts, applying novel design features implemented in the casing architecture and using structural analysis methods at low and high fidelity level.
  • Implementation of casing geometry changes improving steady and transient tip gap size and variation across the mission.
  • Integration and optimisation of effective design solutions, and detailed development of an active compressor tip clearance con-trol concept and its representation in preliminary engine design processes.

Staff selection for this position according to suitability, performance and capability based on the German TV-L full-time scheme and is limited to 4 years. Contracting is in accordance with the German ,,Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz". Severely disabled applicants with essentially equivalent suitability are being hired with preference.
