Head of Rock laboratory and deep geological disposal

The Federal Office of Topography "measures" Switzerland. It surveys and documents the landscape and the underground, and produces high-quality spatially-referenced geodata. Its most important products include landscape and height models, aerial images, orthophotos, geological data and maps, reference data and of course the well-known series of national maps.

Your Tasks

  • Overall responsibility for the strategic and operational management of the rock laboratory and the visitor centre, particularly in terms of complying with swisstopo’s obligations vis-ŕ-vis the Canton of Jura and the research partners
  • Contact person for the steering committee of 22 delegates, the supervisory commission, strategical committee and political authorities at the levels of government, canton and municipality
  • Managing processes at the rock laboratory and deep geological repositories with 10 employees, member of the division management of the Swiss Geological Survey and expert for the Sectoral Plan for Deep Geological Repositories in Switzerland
  • Ensuring the long-term operation of the rock laboratory (staff and financial resources, annual budget of approx. CHF 5 million) in compliance with safety regulations (SUVA, SIA)
  • Further development of the research programme with partners with regard to future deep geological repositories for radioactive waste, CO2 storage and deep geothermal energy

Requirements

  • Qualified geologist with a doctorate title and many years of professional experience in managing a multi-disciplinary research project for deep repositories or geo-resources
  • Expertise in convincingly discussing politically sensitive subject areas skilfully and objectively as well as the ability to assert yourself correctly, confidently and purposefully
  • Excellent knowledge of the geological scene in Switzerland and of the repositories (university, administration, private sector) with a relevant international network
  • Motivated, innovative and customer-oriented individual with strong communication skills and perseverance
  • Good knowledge of a second official language (C1) as well as in English (C1) and passive knowledge of a third official language (B1).
