Horizontal gene transfer via bacteriophage-like particles in environmental bacteria
The transfer of genetic material to a cell independently of reproduction (or replication) is known as horizontal gene transfer (HGT). HGT is a major driver of bacterial evolution. It underlies the acquisition of new traits required for adaptation to changing environments and survival in particular niches. Bacterial HGT can be carried out via natural competence, conjugation and transduction via bacteriophages or gene transfer agents. This project aims at studying HGT via bacteriophage-like particles in environmental bacteria and at addressing evolutionary questions about its contribution to bacterial fitness. The chosen candidate will use classic bacterial genetics and high throughput screening methods to identify essential and nonessential components of HGT systems. He/she will then develop experimental setups to analyze the contribution of HGT to fitness under different environments and conditions. For further information, please contact Dr Diego Gonzalez at the Laboratory of Microbiology of the University of Neuchâtel (diego.gonzalez [a] unine.ch).
The candidate has a strong expertise in bacteriology, including hands-on experience with more than one bacterial models; he/she masters bacterial genetics, including molecular biology techniques, and has an interest in bacterial evolution and phylogeny. He/She has a PhD degree in bacteriology, bacterial genetics or bacterial molecular biology and a taste for broader questions. We are looking for a trustable, highly motivated, and independent person.
The candidate has solid theoretical knowledge and some experience in bacteriology; he/she has a Master’s degree in Life Sciences and is willing to invest time and effort in learning universal bacteriology techniques, bacterial genetics, and molecular biology. We are looking for a highly motivated, hard-working, and resourceful person.
The Laboratory of Microbiology of the University of Neuchâtel offers an intellectually stimulating environment dedicated to the study of environmental and fundamental microbiology. Its strengths are bioremediation, interactions between bacteria and fungi, and environmental bacteriology including research on cellular processes like sporulation, photosynthesis, or horizontal gene transfer.
