PhD Thesis – Novel Approaches for Human Brain Monitoring with Electroencephalography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Your Tasks

The human brain presents some of the most relevant challenges to human progress of this century. The development of new technologies for non-invasive brain monitoring is crucially needed to better probe its function and structure, in both health and disease. Recent technological advances in ultra-high field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), on one hand, and in compact wearable systems for electroencephalography (EEG), on the other, open exciting new possibilities to achieve richer, more valuable pictures of brain function and structure. Key lines of research have recently been identified to improve the integration of these modalities, maximize their sensitivity and specificity, and better understand the biophysical mechanisms underlying the observed signals.

Your mission

In this Doctoral project, you will acquire deep expertise in ultra-high field MRI and EEG modalities and drive new technological advances in this domain. Your work will be integrated in a larger multidisciplinary effort that includes human data acquisition and data analysis, development of new computational tools for signal processing (denoising, image reconstruction, pattern analysis), and new hardware modifications to optimize signal quality and system usability. These advances will be applied to relevant domains of neuroscience and radiology. The work will involve a collaboration between CSEM and the University Hospitals of Lausanne (CHUV), together with the University Hospitals of Bern (Insel) and Geneva (HUG). You will thereby interact in a diverse team of physicists, engineers, neuroscientists and clinicians. As the work yields novel results, you will actively disseminate these findings in international conferences and peer-reviewed journals.


Your profile

  • Master’s degree in Biomedical Eng., Electrical Eng., Physics or related fields
  • Solid experience with Matlab and/or Python programming languages
  • Good communication skills (written and spoken English)
  • Strong analytical skills, critical thinking, proactive problem solving
  • Enthusiasm for learning new concepts and perspectives, and working in teams
  • Former experience with EEG, MRI and neuroimaging approaches is welcome
