The EPFL Space Center (eSpace) is starting a new research initiative on Sustainable Space Logistics. We aim to address the next big challenges in space engineering, namely how to manufacture, transport, store, deliver and remove materials, goods, structures and humans in space. Numerous innovations in the space segment are still needed to revolutionize these space operations. As such, space logistics is a new field of its own and although many concepts can be inherited from current logistics practice, it requires the creation of a new set of competencies. Moreover, as space is a unique and fragile resource, it is key to develop this new ecosystem with a long-term and sustainable vision.
Your mission will be to conduct and perform state-of-the-art research in the domain of sustainable space logistics. You will develop your research in cooperation with laboratories at EPFL and elsewhere in Switzerland. You will be able to develop your own projects and participate in projects of the EPFL Space Center (e.g. CleanSpace One). Main duties and responsibilities include : Perform research in the field of sustainable space logistics
Lead research initiatives with participation of various laboratories (at EPFL or from partner institutions)
Follow-up technology research and perform technology scouting
Build a strong network (institutional, industrial and academic) in the field of research
Write proposals as a lead or as a partner in a consortium
Participate in education and student coaching
Promote space research and its application to the public
Report to the Center’s manager.

You have experience in the field of space R&D/engineering or space economics
You have experience in the field of space logistics and a firm interest in the sustainability of space activities
You have experience in a systems approach to space technology research
You have experience in proposal writing and raising funding from various sources
You have experience dealing with industrial customers or with ESA
You have a good knowledge of French, English and/or German.
