Exzellenzcluster Matters of Activity. Image Space Material

The Cluster of Excellence Matters of Activity invites applications for a doctoral student position as part of its structured doctoral program. The doctoral program promotes disciplinary doctorates in connection with joint research in an interdisciplinary working group with a program duration of 36 months.

The work will benefit from an interdisciplinary team of collaborating partners within the Cluster of Excellence Matters of Activity. Image Space Material and is carried out in close cooperation with the Applied Geometry areas of TU Berlin and FU Berlin alongside the Design discipline of Kunsthochschule Weißensee.

Exploration of the »3D weaving« from a variety of perspectives as part of the project »Weaving«, specifically, the characterization of weaving in three dimensions of space with consideration for the ideas of materials and design; exploration of the encoding of a weave in space and the relationship between the code, the material and the function, using techniques from low-dimensional geometry and topology, knot theory and computational geometry, as well as basic physical principles; development of a mathematical framework in an interdisciplinary setting with connections to design, materials and biology; tasks for own scientific qualification (doctorate)

A completed university degree in mathematics; experiences in differential geometry and/or computational geometry; further qualification in 3D-geometry and animation as well as material science and/or design; a high proficiency in spoken and written English and/or German; a strong interest in interdisciplinary research; high motivation and ability to work well independently as well as part of a team
