PostDoc in in situ XPS

Eidgenossische Technische Hochschule Zürich, ETHZ
ArbeitsortZürich, Region Zürich, Schweiz

We are looking for a postdoctoral student to strengthen our team working on in situ x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) at ETH Zürich and at the Paul Scherrer Institute.

In the field of catalysis for energy-conversion processes, we are developing and applying in situ XPS in the time and space domain with the goal to determine structure-performance relations. The catalyst we are investigating is a noble-metal (Pt and Rh) supported on reducible oxide, such as ceria and titania, in the presence and absence of alkali-dopants. By measuring in the time and space domains, the aim is to provide understanding of the role of catalyst structure in three dimensions and to distinguish spectator from active species involved in oxidation reactions, a novelty in XPS. The ambient pressure photoemission endstation at the Paul Scherrer Institute already allows time-resolved measurements carried out under transient conditions. Efforts will be dedicated to develop a novel approach to get space resolved measurements under reaction conditions. The XPS-team is embedded in an experimental and theoretical group, which will support the project by samples synthesis and data-interpretation.

The successful candidate will contribute to further developing in situ XPS and measuring catalysts under in situ and operando conditions, perform data analysis and provide support to other projects that relate to in situ XPS. A good knowledge of XPS and synchrotron techniques is required. The contract is with ETH - working place is ETH Hönggerberg and PSI Villingen Position is for two to three years, depending on the project development.
