The Institute of new Energy Systems (InES) is one out of three institutes at the center of applied research at Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt (THI). We are seeking a PhD candidate for a research project fully funded by the Free State of Bavaria. The project aims to address key knowledge gaps in seasonal heat transport and storage by means of attuned field and laboratory experiments, as well as by coupled simulation techniques. The project offers dynamic and diverse training opportunities in academic engineering and application-oriented research environments.
The PhD project is dedicated to pit thermal energy storage, and it will be carried out in collaboration with a local industry partner and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT, Prof. Blum). The candidate will set up own tank-based laboratory experiments and execute controlled heating/cooling experiments. A main purpose is to transfer the findings from the small-scale laboratory to a selected large-scale field site. The available degrees of freedom in the technological design make this an exciting and both challenging task, which will ideally lead to an optimized storage system. As crucial ingredient, numerical simulation techniques will be applied for interpreting the laboratory measurements.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and independent person with passion for science and willing to work in an evolving interdisciplinary team. Upon start, applicants must have a completed master’s degree in geosciences, environmental sciences, physics, engineering, or any related field. Applicants must be able to learn and pursue experimental research and computational tasks. Good communication skills are essential. Skills in speaking, reading and writing about science in English are a plus, and German language skills are obligatory.
We offer a temporary full-time position for three years that starts as of spring 2018 (or as soon as possible thereafter). The remuneration shall be in line with the German industrial agreement L salary group 13. The possibility of a cooperative doctorate will be supported . The vacancy can only be filled with reservation of project funding.
