Center of Applied Research
Institute of new Energy Systems
(Reference number P-18/13)
The Institute of new Energy Systems (InES) is one out of three institutes at the center of applied research at Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt (THI). Currently, there are six professors and more than 20 scientists at InES working on pioneering technologies in the field of renewable energies. Please visit ?url=www.thi.de%2Fgo%2Fenergy&module=jobs&id=130382" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">www.thi.de/go/energy for details on selected research projects at InES.
We are seeking a PhD candidate for a research project fully funded by the Free State of Bavaria. The project aims to address key knowledge gaps in seasonal heat transport and storage by means of attuned field and laboratory experiments, as well as by coupled simulation techniques. The project offers dynamic and diverse training opportunities in academic engineering and application-oriented research environments.
The PhD project is dedicated to pit thermal energy storage, and it will be carried out in collaboration with a local industry partner and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT, Prof. Blum). The candidate will set up own tank-based laboratory experiments and execute controlled heating/cooling experiments. A main purpose is to transfer the findings from the small-scale laboratory to a selected large-scale field site. The available degrees of freedom in the technological design make this an exciting and both challenging task, which will ideally lead to an optimized storage system. As crucial ingredient, numerical simulation techniques will be applied for interpreting the laboratory measurements.
