Engineering New Enzymes and Pathways for the Biosynthesis of Antibiotics

Salary: £31,076 to £38,183 per annum

You will work within the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology (MIB) – ?" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"> – for three years starting from April 2017. The position is part of a large £3.2 million project funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) / Innovate UK and led by Professor Jason Micklefield in collaboration with GlaxoSmithKline and the John Innes Centre.

The project aims to engineer new enzymes and biosynthetic pathways required for production of medically important antibiotics in Streptomyces host strains. The project will involve the development of new approaches for engineering non-ribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) enzymes to create new assembly lines that can generate novel peptides. In addition to this, new tailoring enzymes will be evolved to derivatise the peptides. The new suite of enzymes will be introduced into an industrially optimised Streptomyces super-host strain to create new biosynthetic pathways that can deliver antibiotics which are urgently required to combat emerging antimicrobial resistance.

You will join a large interdisciplinary team of biologists and chemists (see: ?" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"> ) and must hold a PhD, or have equivalent postdoctoral experience in molecular microbiology, microbial genetics, and/or molecular biology/biochemistry.

The Manchester Institute of Biotechnology (MIB) is strongly committed to promoting equality and diversity, including the Athena SWAN Charter for gender equality in higher education. The constituent Schools hold a Silver Award which recognises their good practice in relation to gender; including flexible working arrangements, family-friendly policies, and support to allow staff to achieve a good work-life balance. We particularly welcome applications from women for this post. Appointments will always be made on merit. For further information, please visit ?" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">
