Four researchers from Leipzig University have been accepted into the renowned scientific society Academia Europaea: the chemist Prof. Evamarie Hey-Hawkins, the physician Markus Löffler, the historian Stefan Troebst and the communication scientist Christian Pentzold. Founded in Cambridge in 1988, the aim of the Academy is to promote research and education in Europe, to strengthen international and interdisciplinary exchange and to advise governments and international organizations on scientific issues.

Evamarie Hey-Hawkins , Emeritus Professor of Inorganic Chemistry says: "This is a special recognition of my scientific achievements and my many contributions to academia worldwide. The Academia Europaea stands for many things that are important to me. You think and research beyond national borders and those of your own research."

Emeritus physician Markus Löffler , Professor of Medical Informatics, Statistics and Documentation, says of his acceptance: "Being accepted into the Academia Europaea means a great deal to me. I see it as recognition for many activities in the field of clinical trial research, epidemiology, modeling of biological processes and medical informatics. And I see it as a mandate for further commitment to science and the freedom of science."

Stefan Troebst, Professor Emeritus of Cultural History of Eastern Europe at the Global and European Studies Institute at Leipzig University and former Deputy Director of the Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe (GWZO), says: "For me as a historian of Eastern Europe, the Academia Europaea with its focus on both halves of Europe is particularly attractive."

Communication scientist Christian Pentzold conducts research into topics including internet-based communication and cooperation, digital media technologies and human-robot communication: "I am delighted to be accepted into the Academy. The Academia Europaea brings together scientists from different countries and disciplines and thus promotes the exchange of researchers across borders. As a member, I can play an active role in shaping this exchange."

The new members will be formally inducted at the Academia Europaea’s annual conference in Barcelona on October 16, 2025.
