The hospital reform initiated by former Health Minister Karl Lauterbach aims to reduce the economic pressure on hospitals, restructure the hospital landscape and improve the quality of treatment at the same time. Not every hospital would be allowed to offer every service, so-called reserve budgets would replace the current system of flat rates per case, and service groups would be introduced and allocated to hospitals. One thing is certain: the hospital landscape in Germany will change over the next few years.

In his lecture at the TU Ilmenau Citizens’ Campus, Dr. Marcel John, Managing Director of the Ilm-Kreis-Kliniken Arnstadt-Ilmenau and a graduate in business administration, will guide you through the jungle of the current financing system of German hospitals and the planned reform steps of the hospital reform. The specialist in anaesthesia then explores the question of how these steps can contribute to improving the framework conditions for hospitals and what this means for healthcare provision for the population.
