Germany is a parliamentary and federal democracy. Constitutional organs are the German Federal Parliament, the Federal Council, the Federal President, the Federal Government and the Federal Constitutional Court. Since the German reunification in 1990, Germany consist of 16 Federal States. The Federal President is the head of state and the government is led by the Federal Chancellor.
Germany has a surface of 357.376 square kilometer
From the most northern point to the most southern point Germany has a length of 876 kilomter and from the eastern point to the western point a leght of 640 kilometer.
Germany has borders with nine countries and in the north the North Sea and the Baltic Sea and in the south the Alps.
The largest cities
Germany has 79 large cities. Four cities have more than one million habitants (2015): Berlin, the capital (3.5 millions), Hamburg (1.78 millions), Munich (1.45 millions) and Cologne (1.06 millions).
Ten more cities have more than a half million habitans: Frankfurt (Main), Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Essen, Leipzig, Bremen, Dresden, Hannover and Nuremberg.
More than half of the German cities have less than 200.000 habitants.
Germanies largest metropolitan area "Rhein-Ruhr" has almost 10 million habitants.
Germany is worldwide known as an attractive location for research and provides a huge number of research sites: universities, universities of applied science, research institutions, highly innovative companies and federal institutes.
Germany has more than 750 government-financed research institutions and research- and developmentcenters that are run by companies.
Companies in Germany are very active in research and development. The investments are increasing year by year: Nearly 54 billion Euro in 2012.
Germany is one of the large economies in the world and concerning the GDP, Germany is the largest economy in europe. The most important sectors are the industry and the service sector. Within the industry, the most important sectors are the automotive-, the electrical engineering-, the mechanical engineering- and the chemical industry.
A very important area of the German economy is the are the small and medium-sized companies. Companies with an annual sales volumen until 50 million Euros and maximum 500 employees are considered as SME’s. More than 95% of these companies are family businesses. SME’s are very interesting employers, not only for locals but also for foreign academics.
Germany has a very good infrastructure, a high-quality university education and is highly innovative. The companies have a very high stage of development. The capacity for innovation also comes from the creativity of Germanies researchers and engineers in developping new ideas.
